Pregnancy Massage in Handforth, Physiotherapy-Led Care
If you’re pregnant and struggling with back, hip or pelvic pain, this is physiotherapy-led massage built specifically for pregnancy, delivered from our clinic on Wilmslow Road in Handforth and adjusted to your stage of pregnancy and any complications you may have. We see clients from Handforth and Wilmslow, as well as Alderley Edge, Cheadle and Bramhall.
That distinction matters if you’re dealing with pelvic girdle pain, symphysis pubis dysfunction (SPD), sciatica, or a pre-existing back condition alongside the normal aches of pregnancy, our team understands the clinical picture behind your discomfort, not just how to apply pregnancy-safe massage technique.
Pregnancy massage sessions are delivered by Lily, a physiotherapist with specific training in pregnancy-safe massage technique, working under the clinical oversight of Clinical Director Richard Higgs, a Chartered, HCPC-registered physiotherapist. Meet the full team on our Meet The Team page.
What Is Pregnancy Massage?
Pregnancy massage is a specialised form of therapeutic massage adapted specifically for the physical changes of pregnancy, using modified techniques, pressure, and positioning to safely and effectively ease pregnancy-related discomfort at every stage.
Many of the women we see are dealing with round ligament pain, rib and mid-back discomfort as the bump grows, or the general strain of carrying extra weight through the third trimester. Others come in with carpal tunnel symptoms or restless legs. Massage on its own isn’t the same as a course of physiotherapy treatment, but because it’s delivered by a physiotherapist, we can spot when something needs a fuller assessment rather than more massage, and we’ll say so.

What to Expect During Your Appointment
Booking Your Appointment
You can book by calling 01625 783992, messaging us on WhatsApp at +44 7792 068822, or using our contact page. We’ll ask a few quick questions about your stage of pregnancy so we can match you with the right appointment slot.
Your First Appointment
Your appointment begins with a brief consultation covering your stage of pregnancy, any pain or complications, and areas you’d particularly like addressed. Because our team has physiotherapy training, we can flag and adapt around any clinical concerns, not just apply a standard routine.
During Treatment
Throughout treatment, we use supportive positioning (including specialist pregnancy pillows and side-lying set-ups) to ensure your comfort and safety at every stage, with no requirement to lie flat on your back.
How Many Sessions Will I Need?
There’s no fixed course of treatment. Some women book a single session to get through a particularly hard week, others prefer regular sessions, say every few weeks, through the second and third trimester. We’ll suggest a sensible frequency based on what you tell us at consultation, and you’re free to book as few or as many sessions as suit you.
We’ll let you know if there’s anything worth mentioning to your midwife, and suggest a few things to try at home, gentle stretches or a change in sleeping position, to keep the benefit going between sessions. If anything during your appointment suggests you’d benefit from a fuller physiotherapy assessment, we’ll talk you through that option rather than just continuing with massage.
When Can I Have a Pregnancy Massage?
Pregnancy massage is typically appropriate from after the first trimester (around 12 weeks), though this is always assessed individually based on your specific pregnancy and any complications.
If you have a high-risk pregnancy or specific medical concerns, we’ll talk this through with you, and where needed, liaise with your midwife or obstetric team, before your appointment.
If travelling into the clinic becomes uncomfortable in the later stages of pregnancy, we also offer Physiotherapy Home Visits, so your massage and physiotherapy care can continue at home for as long as you need it.
Your Safety Comes First
Pregnancy massage is generally safe and enjoyable, but it should never delay you seeking medical advice for symptoms that need urgent attention.
If you experience a severe or sudden headache, visual disturbance, sudden swelling of the face or hands, reduced or altered foetal movements, vaginal bleeding, or pain and swelling in one leg (a possible sign of deep vein thrombosis), contact your midwife, GP or NHS 111 straight away rather than waiting for your massage appointment.

Is pregnancy massage safe in the first trimester?
We generally recommend waiting until after the first trimester (around 12 weeks) before booking pregnancy massage, as this is when miscarriage risk is naturally highest and many practitioners prefer to avoid non-essential massage during this window. If you have symptoms in the first trimester that need addressing, contact us and we can advise on the safest options for your stage of pregnancy.
Do I need sign-off from my midwife before booking?
Not routinely, most straightforward pregnancies don’t require midwife sign-off before pregnancy massage. However, if you have a high-risk pregnancy, a pre-existing medical condition, or any complications flagged by your midwife or obstetric team, we will talk this through with you and, where needed, liaise directly with them before your appointment.
Can I have a pregnancy massage if I have a high-risk pregnancy?
Possibly, it depends on the specific nature of the risk. During your initial consultation we’ll ask about your pregnancy history and any complications, and where appropriate we’ll coordinate with your midwife or obstetric team so that treatment is adapted safely around your individual circumstances.
Is pregnancy massage the same as a normal massage?
No, pregnancy massage is different from a standard massage. It uses techniques, pressure and positioning specifically adapted for pregnancy, and because it’s delivered by a physiotherapist at our clinic, we can also recognise when your symptoms need a broader physiotherapy assessment rather than massage alone.
Will I have to lie on my front or flat on my back?
You won’t be asked to lie flat on your back or on your front at any point. We use side-lying positions supported by pillows, so you stay comfortable and safe throughout.
Can pregnancy massage help with sciatica or pelvic girdle pain (SPD) specifically?
Yes, pregnancy massage can ease the muscle tightness and pressure that contribute to sciatica and pelvic girdle pain (SPD), though for ongoing or worsening SPD we may recommend a fuller physiotherapy assessment alongside massage.
Is pregnancy massage safe in the third trimester?
The third trimester is generally a safe time for pregnancy massage, and it’s often when women find it most helpful, though we’ll always check for any new symptoms or complications at each appointment.
Can’t find what your looking for?
Trusted by our Handforth community.
I’ve had two pregnancy massages with Lily now and both have been fantastic. She really took care to discuss everything beforehand and made sure I was completely comfortable. Both times I’ve left feeling totally relaxed and got a great night of sleep.
