Expert Physiotherapy
At Handforth Physiotherapy and Rehab
Physiotherapy at Handforth Physiotherapy and Rehab starts with finding out what’s actually causing your pain or movement problem, then building a clear plan to resolve it, led throughout by a Chartered, HCPC-registered physiotherapist. The clinic is based on Wilmslow Road in Handforth, and appointments are unhurried by design: enough time to properly assess what’s going on rather than guess at it.
We provide personalised, evidence-led care for individuals at every level, from high-performance athletes to those recovering from surgery or managing the physical demands of everyday life.
Our approach is informed by nationally recognised clinical standards, including NICE guidance and the Chartered Society of Physiotherapy’s (CSP) professional practice standards, alongside each physiotherapist’s individual clinical judgement and your own goals and preferences.
We are proud to be based on Wilmslow Road in the heart of Handforth, making us easily accessible for patients across Handforth, Wilmslow, Alderley Edge and Cheadle.
Who Physiotherapy Is For
Physiotherapy helps with all sorts of starting points: a sudden injury, a pain that’s crept up gradually, or something you’ve lived with and managed for years. Patients come to us after sporting injuries, following surgery, during pregnancy or in the months after having a baby, or simply because stiffness has started getting in the way of ordinary life. You don’t need a diagnosis before booking. Working out what’s going on is part of what happens at your first appointment.
What to Expect
Your First Appointment
Your first appointment is designed to be thorough and focused entirely on you. We begin with an in-depth conversation about your symptoms, medical history, lifestyle, and goals, followed by a detailed physical assessment.
You’ll receive clear, professional insight into what we find and a structured plan for your recovery. This may include:
- Education about your injury or condition so you understand what’s happening in your body and how to manage it confidently.
- Tailored rehabilitation exercises to build strength, mobility, and promote long term recovery.
- Hands-on manual therapy where appropriate to help reduce pain or other symptoms.
Where specialist input is required, we will guide you and facilitate referral to ensure you receive the right care.
You’ll leave with clarity, confidence, and a clear path forward.
Booking and Before You Arrive
You can book online, by phone, by WhatsApp, or by contacting us; no GP referral is needed. Once you’ve booked, we’ll confirm your appointment time and tell you what to bring, such as any relevant scan results or letters, details of current medication, and clothing that gives easy access to the area we’ll be assessing.
After Your Session
Follow-up sessions tend to be shorter, focused on progressing your rehabilitation plan, reviewing exercises and adjusting treatment as you improve. By the end of your first visit, your physiotherapist will give you a rough idea of how many sessions are likely to help and how often to attend, though this is always reviewed as your recovery progresses rather than fixed from day one.
Common Conditions We Treat
Physiotherapy at our Handforth clinic can help with a wide range of conditions, including back pain, knee pain and sports injuries, as well as many other musculoskeletal complaints. If you’re not sure whether physiotherapy is right for your symptoms, our Who We Help page outlines the people and conditions we commonly support, or you can contact us directly to ask.
We also see patients locally for neck pain, shoulder pain, hip pain, ankle injuries and rehabilitation after surgery, including joint replacement. If your concern isn’t listed here, get in touch: most musculoskeletal problems fall well within what physiotherapy can help with.
Your Questions, Answered.
Can’t find what your looking for?
Do I need a referral from my GP to see a physiotherapist?
No. You do not need a GP referral to book a physiotherapy appointment with us, you can self-refer directly. If you have private health insurance, some insurers may ask you to obtain authorisation or a referral first; please check your policy or contact your insurer.
Can I use my health insurance to pay for physiotherapy here?
We are recognised by a number of major insurers, including Bupa, WPA, AXA Health and Aviva. Please bring your policy and authorisation details to your appointment, or contact us in advance so we can confirm cover with your insurer.
How long is a physiotherapy appointment and what does it cost?
Appointment length and pricing vary by session type. Please see our Pricing page for full up-to-date details, or contact us and we’ll be happy to advise.
How should I prepare for my first physiotherapy appointment?
Please wear or bring comfortable, loose-fitting clothing that allows easy access to the area being assessed. It’s helpful to bring details of any relevant scans, letters or medication, and a list of your current symptoms and goals so we can make the most of your first session.
What conditions does physiotherapy treat?
Physiotherapy treats musculoskeletal problems such as back and neck pain, joint pain, sports injuries, and recovery needs following surgery, alongside broader areas like women’s and men’s health. If you’re unsure whether your symptoms fit, our Who We Help page gives a fuller picture, or you can ask us directly before booking.
Is physiotherapy painful?
Physiotherapy shouldn’t leave you in significant pain. Some techniques, such as certain manual therapy or exercise, can cause mild, short-lived discomfort, but your physiotherapist will always work within a level you’re comfortable with and explain what to expect before starting any treatment.
How many physiotherapy sessions will I need?
This depends on your condition, how long you’ve had it, and how you respond to treatment, so your physiotherapist will discuss a realistic plan with you after your first assessment rather than quoting a fixed number in advance.
Is Handforth Physiotherapy and Rehab easy to get to from Wilmslow or Cheadle?
Yes. The clinic is based at 59 Wilmslow Road in Handforth, a short drive from Wilmslow, Cheadle and Alderley Edge, with good local road links across the surrounding area.
Who will treat me at Handforth Physiotherapy and Rehab?
Your care is overseen by Richard Higgs, a Chartered, HCPC-registered physiotherapist, so you can expect treatment that meets recognised professional standards throughout your visit. (Details of the specific treating clinician for your appointment will be confirmed at booking.)

What Our Patients Say
I have been in pain, like Lord Voldermort is using the Cruciatus (Crucio) curse on me 24/7. Yes I am still in pain sometimes but it's manageable so I owe a lot to Handforth Physio as I can now sleep, because of them. Go to work, because of them. Play with my kids all because of them.
I can't rate them highly enough, professional but also they will all have a laugh with you. You feel like they actually care not just a 'get him in get him out' job. The equipment is like something out of Star Wars it's that modern and advanced.
Seriously if you have a problem, it's really worth seeing these guys. Richard is the man and I've seen Leira once who gave me some exercises to work off this nerve pain but It's clear to me anyone that Richard employs will embody his expertise too.
I have had 3 sessions with Leira now and have seen significant improvements and am recovering well. Leira is very knowledgeable and professional and has been able to advise me about exercises and the best ways to get back to full fitness.
I have been really pleased with Handforth Physiotherapy and would recommend them to anyone looking for physiotherapy services.
