Compression Boot Therapy at Handforth Physiotherapy and Rehab
Compression boot therapy is a comfortable, relaxing recovery treatment that uses intermittent air pressure to apply gentle compression to the legs in a sequential pattern.
Many people choose compression boot sessions as part of their recovery routine following exercise, long days on their feet, running events or demanding training schedules. Sessions are designed to help you take time to recover, recharge and look after your body.
At Handforth Physiotherapy and Rehab, compression boot therapy is available as a standalone recovery session or alongside physiotherapy and sports massage appointments.
Compression boot sessions may help with:
- Post-exercise recovery
- Feelings of tired or heavy legs
- Temporary muscle soreness after activity
- Recovery between training sessions
- Relaxation and wellbeing
- Supporting your overall recovery routine
Individual responses can vary, and compression boot therapy should not be considered a replacement for medical treatment or rehabilitation.

What do compression boots feel like?
The boots gently inflate and deflate around the legs, creating a rhythmic compression sensation. Many people describe it as similar to a massage.
How long is a session?
Most sessions last around 20β30 minutes, depending on the appointment type and your preferences.
Can compression boots help recovery after exercise?
Some evidence suggests intermittent pneumatic compression may help reduce perceptions of muscle soreness and support recovery following exercise. Individual responses can vary.
Who commonly uses compression boots?
Compression boots are commonly used by runners, gym-goers, cyclists, team sport athletes and people with physically demanding jobs.
Can I combine compression boots with massage or physiotherapy?
Yes. Compression boot therapy is often used alongside sports massage, deep tissue massage and physiotherapy treatment.
What should I wear?
Please attend wearing full-length leggings, tracksuit bottoms or other long-legged clothing. Compression boots should not be worn directly against bare skin.
Are compression boots suitable for everyone?
No. Compression boot therapy may not be appropriate for some medical conditions.
Please speak to your clinician before treatment if you have:
- A history of deep vein thrombosis (DVT)
- Active infection or cellulitis
- Significant circulatory problems
- Uncontrolled cardiac conditions
- Open wounds or recent acute injury
- Any condition affecting sensation or circulation
Can I use the boots for Lymphoedema?
Compression boots are designed for use with recovery from sport and exercise. Their use has not be researched for medical conditions such as lymphoedema, we therefore do not recommend they are use for this purpose.
Do I need an assessment first?
For standalone recovery sessions, an assessment is not usually required. However, if you are attending for injury management or rehabilitation, your physiotherapist may recommend an assessment first.
