If you’ve never done a Pilates class before, the hardest part is often just walking through the door. What if everyone else is more experienced? What if you can’t keep up? What if it makes an old niggle worse?
These are the most common worries we hear from first-timers — and they’re exactly why our Beginner classes exist.
Who Beginner Classes Are For
Our Beginner Pilates classes are built specifically for people who are completely new to Pilates, returning to exercise after time off or an injury, managing ongoing pain or stiffness, or simply feeling unsure about joining a group class for the first time. There’s no fitness threshold to meet before you start.
Before Your First Class
What to wear: Comfortable, close-fitting activewear you can move freely in. Bare feet or grip socks are fine — no trainers needed for mat work.
What to bring: A water bottle. We provide mats and equipment.
Arrive a little early for your first session so your physiotherapist can briefly check in on anything relevant — old injuries, current aches, or specific goals — before the class starts.
What Actually Happens in the Class
A typical Beginner class focuses on the fundamentals: breathing technique, finding and engaging your deep core muscles, basic postural alignment, and simple, controlled mat exercises for strength and mobility.
Because classes are capped at 3–4 people, your physiotherapist will be watching and correcting your form throughout — you won’t be left to copy the person next to you.
Will It Be Too Easy or Too Hard?
Neither.
Because a chartered physiotherapist is teaching the class, every exercise can be scaled up or down in real time for your ability and any injury history — so the same class works whether you’re generally fit and just new to Pilates, or returning cautiously after surgery or a long-standing back problem.
What Happens After Your First Few Classes
Most beginners stay in the Beginner class for several weeks to build a solid foundation before progressing to Intermediate.
If you’re managing active pain or a specific injury, we may suggest a 1:1 assessment first, so your programme is built entirely around you before you join the group.
